Intuit Sunsetting QuickBooks Desktop Applications in 2025 – Is it time to consider ERP?

As outlined in a previous article, QuickBooks’ parent company Intuit has made a decision to discontinue sales of its QuickBooks Desktop applications in the US after September 2024. Much like the death sentence 2020 applications received in May of 2023, the last breath will come on May 31 of this year for the following:

  • QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2022
  • QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus 2022 (General Business, Contractor, Manufacturing & Wholesale, Nonprofit, Professional Services, and Retail)
  • QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 22
  • QuickBooks Premier Accountant Edition Plus 2022
  • QuickBooks Enterprise Accountant 22
  • QuickBooks Desktop for Mac Plus 2022

When we say sunsetting, this doesn’t only mark the end of sales for these products, but rather the end of overall support and security updates as well.

As Intuit has put it in their article, “… you won’t have access to live technical support if you run into problems or any of the other Intuit services that can be integrated with QuickBooks Desktop… This also means you won’t receive critical security updates protecting your data starting June 1, 2025.”

Which can be translated into the following impact for small business owners:

  1. Critical Security Risks
  • No more patches for software vulnerabilities → Exposure to cyberattacks (ransomware, data breaches).
  • Growing incompatibility with new banking standards (e.g., SSL protocols).
  1. Compliance Issues
  • Obsolescence of tax filing formats (e.g., changes in tax rates).
  • Risk of fines if the software no longer meets legal requirements.
  1. Operational Disruptions
  • Inability to import/export data with modern systems (banks, partner software).
  • Frequent bugs on new operating systems.

What Now? Consider SAP Business One

Before you just make a lateral move and hop on the next version of QuickBooks, seek the greater opportunity sitting in front of you… considering an upgrade. There is no harm in exploring your options. In fact, SAP Business One is a clear-cut software to consider.

Before making a move, here are key questions your executive team should be asking their teams:

  • Are you expecting to grow your business over the next two years?
  • Are you considering deploying an ecommerce website, EDI or a customer portal in the near future?
  • Is your team spending too much time entering orders and journal entries?
  • Do you know exactly what quantity of raw materials or finished goods is sitting in your warehouse?
  • Do you use disconnected applications to run your business (i.e. CRM, WMS, Business Intelligence, marketplaces, shipping platforms…)?

If you answer “YES” to one or more of the questions above, it means it would be worth your time to at least consider evaluating a new business management solution.
